After hearing the devastating news of Kobe Bryant, his daughter Gigi, and the other passengers onboard the helicopter crash that took so many lives on Sunday, I couldn’t help but reflect on why it hit me so hard. While I can’t claim that I was Kobe’s number one fan, what really hit home was thinking about him as a father, husband, friend, and all the things he had yet to accomplish. It seemed so trivial and silly to be posting food stories on Instagram but what I realized is that food can be a source of healing for so many people. I saw many people reeling with the tragic news by getting together with friends and embracing their loved ones. I immediately thought back to when my grandma passed away almost exactly 5 years ago. My cousin Kim and I hopped on a plane from San Francisco and took the next flight out to Colorado immediately after hearing the news. We showed up to our grandparents home and gathering place just a few short hours later to find heaps and heaps of homemade food, deliveries from restaurants, and food sent from relatives just about everywhere we could imagine. For many cultures, showing up with food, or asking “are you hungry” is our way of saying we care and expressing our deepest gratitudes. A plate of food can express things when words feel inadequate. With that in mind, I hope you all are gathering with your loved ones to watch the Super Bowl this weekend. Since the Broncos played a less than impressive season and did not make the big event, my focus will be on the food.
